How to Register a Telegram Account Safely
Everything you need to create a Telegram account the right way: what the platform actually requires, how verification works, why virtual numbers get banned, and which privacy and security settings to change in your first ten minutes.
What You Need Before You Register
Telegram is a cloud-based messenger, which means your account lives on Telegram's servers rather than on a single device. To create that account you need exactly one thing: a mobile phone number that can receive an SMS text message or a phone call. Telegram uses this number as your unique account identifier, and the platform is explicit that landline numbers are not supported. Once your number is verified, you can sign in to the same account from official apps on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux, as well as Telegram Web, and your cloud chats stay synchronized across all of them.

Age requirements are not uniform across every surface you will see. Telegram's current Terms of Service state that users in EU countries, the United Kingdom, and Australia must be at least 18 years old to sign up, while app-store age ratings for the same app have differed over time and by store. Older cached versions of the regional terms showed a lower threshold, so if you are setting up an account for a younger family member, treat the current 18+ rule for those regions as the binding policy and check the terms shown during signup in your own country.
Plan where you will install the app. On Android you can install Telegram from Google Play or download the official APK directly from telegram.org, which Telegram says has fewer restrictions and updates itself from Telegram's own servers. If you choose the direct download, get it only from telegram.org, never from third-party mirror sites. Regional availability can also change: in June 2026, for example, the app was temporarily delisted from Google Play in India under a government order, so the store listing you expect may not always be available in every country.
Step by Step: Registering Your Telegram Account

- Install the official Telegram app from the App Store, Google Play, or telegram.org, then open it and tap Start Messaging.
- Choose your country and type your mobile number in international format, for example +1 for the United States or +44 for the United Kingdom, then confirm.
- Wait for the verification code. Telegram usually sends a code by SMS; in some cases it verifies you through an automated phone call instead.
- Enter the code in the app. Never share this code with anyone, no matter who asks.
- Type a first name (a last name is optional). This becomes your public screen name, and it does not have to be your legal name.
- Optionally add a profile photo. Your account is now active and ready to use.
Note
During setup Telegram asks for permission to sync your device contacts so it can show you which friends already use the service. This is a genuine choice, not a formality: granting it uploads the names and numbers in your address book to Telegram's servers. If you prefer not to share your contact list, decline the prompt; you can still message people by username. If you change your mind later, you can stop syncing and delete previously synced contacts from Settings > Privacy and Security > Data Settings.
A note on registering from a computer: Telegram Web and the desktop apps are designed around an account that already exists. Their login screens offer a QR code that you scan with the mobile app, or a phone-number flow that expects to deliver a code to an existing session. If you are creating a brand-new account, do it in the mobile app first, then link your computer afterwards from Settings > Devices. This order avoids the most common first-day login frustrations.
Not Receiving the Verification Code? Work Through This List
The most frequent registration problem is a code that never arrives. Before assuming something is broken, check the most common cause: if your number was ever logged in to Telegram on another device, the code is sent to that device as a message inside Telegram itself, in the verified service chat, rather than by SMS. Open Telegram on your old phone, tablet, or computer and look there first.

- If no other session exists, work through these checks in order: confirm you typed the number correctly in international format and that the SIM is active and can receive ordinary texts
- make sure you have real cellular coverage, not just Wi-Fi
- disable any spam-protection or unknown-sender filtering in your phone's messaging app, because Telegram codes arrive from short codes that filters often hide
- update the app to the latest version or reinstall it

Important
Some countries block Telegram at the network or app-store level, and SMS delivery from Telegram can be disrupted there as a side effect. This guide cannot and does not advise evading legal restrictions in your jurisdiction. If Telegram is restricted where you live, the safe course is to wait until the restriction is lifted or use the service from a location where it operates lawfully.
Why Virtual Numbers Get New Accounts Banned
Important
It is tempting to register with a free virtual or VOIP number to keep your real number private, but Telegram's own anti-spam documentation warns that certain virtual and VOIP numbers, and numbers whose previous owners abused the platform, trigger an automatically harsh response. Community threads are full of reports of accounts limited or banned minutes after creation for exactly this reason. Editorial guides likewise report that Google Voice and similar services are rejected or risky. If your new account is limited despite doing nothing wrong, Telegram's appeal channel is the official @SpamBot inside the app.
There is one officially supported way to register without a SIM card. Since December 2022, Telegram accepts blockchain-based anonymous numbers sold on Fragment, the platform connected to the TON ecosystem. These are paid collectible numbers that are not tied to any SIM card and work only on Telegram; the original supply sold out in December 2022, so today they can only be bought from existing owners. This route costs real money and is aimed at users with strong privacy needs, but it is the only SIM-free path that Telegram itself endorses.
Secure Your New Account in the First Ten Minutes
A fresh Telegram account is protected only by SMS codes, and SMS is the weakest link in account security because phone numbers can be hijacked through SIM-swap fraud. Telegram's answer is Two-Step Verification, introduced in 2015, which requires a password of your choosing in addition to the code whenever the account is accessed from a new device. Security vendors reviewing Telegram's settings consistently recommend turning it on immediately.
Steps
- Open Settings and go to Privacy and Security.
- Tap Two-Step Verification, then Set Password.
- Choose a strong password that you do not use anywhere else, and add a hint if you want one.
- Add a recovery email address and confirm it with the code Telegram sends. Do not skip this step: without a recovery email, forgetting your Two-Step Verification password can permanently lock you out of the account.
- While you are in the same menu, review Devices to see every active session, and terminate any session you do not recognize.
One more expectation to set correctly: regular Telegram cloud chats are encrypted between your device and Telegram's servers, not end to end. Only Secret Chats, which you start manually on mobile, use end-to-end encryption so that no one but you and the recipient can read them. Knowing this distinction from day one helps you choose the right chat type for genuinely sensitive conversations.
Privacy Settings Worth Changing on Day One
By default, your phone number is visible only to people who already have it saved in their contacts, and strangers cannot see it. You can tighten this further under Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number by setting visibility to Nobody, with optional exceptions. Keep in mind that people who already have your number saved will still see that you joined Telegram unless you also adjust who can find you by your number.
If you want to be reachable without ever giving out your number, set a username. Usernames are optional public handles made of letters, numbers, and underscores that let anyone find and message you through search without learning your phone number. If you would rather not be discoverable by strangers at all, simply leave the username empty; you can add or delete one at any time. Finally, be aware that Telegram deletes accounts after a period of inactivity, by default several months to eighteen months depending on your setting, so an account you register and abandon will eventually self-destruct and free the number for re-registration.
