What Telegram bots are and how they work
Telegram bots are special accounts operated by software rather than people. They do not require a phone number, and every message you send a bot is relayed through Telegram's servers to a server controlled by the bot's owner, which processes the input and sends a response.
Bots can present custom keyboards, host Mini Apps, accept payments, and run inline inside any chat. Two properties matter most for everyday users: a bot can never message you first, and a bot's behavior is defined entirely by whoever operates its backend server, not by Telegram.
How bot identity is matched to sources
Every entry on this page was matched to cited public sources by opening its canonical public t.me page directly and, where a third-party operator exists, its first-party owner website. We treat three signals as meaningful: a verification badge on the t.me page, an explicit reference in Telegram's own documentation or blog, and a first-party website that links to the exact bot handle.

Exact-handle matching matters more than names: anyone can name a bot 'Premium Bot' or 'BotFather 2', and impostors imitating popular bots are a documented scam vector.
Official Telegram service bots
Telegram itself operates a set of service bots that handle core platform functions. These include @BotFather for creating bots, @stickers for sticker packs, @PremiumBot for subscriptions, @SpamBot for account-limit appeals, and @EURegulation for GDPR data requests.
These are the safest starting points in the ecosystem because their identity is anchored in Telegram's own documentation. However, users should confirm the exact handle and verification badge, because fake bots imitating official services are common.
Third-party group management and utility bots
Group management bots moderate large communities, filter spam, and provide analytics. They require admin rights, which means granting broad access to group content — a trade-off admins should make deliberately.

Bot privacy and visibility limits
In one-on-one chats, a bot sees every message you send it, and that content is processed on the bot owner's server. Telegram's privacy guarantees do not extend to what third-party developers do with your inputs.

Are Telegram bots safe to use?
No blanket guarantee is possible. A bot is only as trustworthy as the server operator behind it. Official Telegram service bots and third-party bots whose handles are matched to first-party owner sites present lower risk, but you should never share passwords, one-time codes, or financial credentials with any bot.
Can a Telegram bot message me first?
No. Telegram's platform rules prevent bots from initiating conversations. A bot can only contact you after you start a chat with it or add it to a group. If an unknown account messages you first, it is a regular account impersonating a bot.
How do I know whether a bot is official?

What can a bot see in my group?
By default, bots run in privacy mode and only receive commands addressed to them and replies to their own messages. If privacy mode is disabled or the bot is promoted to administrator, it can read all messages in the group.
How do I use an inline bot like @gif or @wiki?
Type the bot's username followed by a space and your search terms in any chat — for example '@gif hello' — then tap a result to send it. Inline bots do not need to be added to the chat.
How do I remove or block a bot?
In a private chat, open the bot's profile and choose Block, then delete the chat. In a group, an administrator can remove the bot from the member list and revoke its admin rights. Use the in-app Report option to report abuse.
